The Lions Roar at Chepauk
In a contest Chennai Super Kings vs Delhi Capitals that had the faithful crowd at MA Chidambaram Stadium on its feet from the very first over, the Chennai Super Kings delivered a masterclass in T20 batting to post a formidable 212/2 in their 20 overs, and then defended it with clinical precision, dismissing Delhi Capitals for 189 to claim a convincing 23-run victory. The win, played under clear skies on a warm Chennai evening, underlined CSK’s enduring quality as one of the IPL’s most consistent outfits — part experience, part grit, and no small amount of class.
Delhi, winning the toss and choosing to bowl, must have fancied their chances of strangling CSK’s
batters on a pitch that showed signs of offering purchase to the seamers. Instead, they ran into a
Sanju Samson in the kind of form that makes opposition captains wince.
First Innings: Samson Steals the Show
Sanju Samson walked to the crease and immediately looked at home, treating the Chepauk surface
as his personal backyard. He was at his brutal best — driving through the covers, flicking mercilessly
through midwicket, and dispatching anything short over the rope with casual authority. When the dust
settled, Samson had contributed an unbeaten 115 off 56 balls — a breathtaking knock featuring 15
fours and 4 sixes at a strike rate of 205.
Opening partner Ruturaj Gaikwad offered early support with 15 runs off 18 balls before falling to Axar
Patel in the seventh over, caught for a relatively quiet start. That dismissal brought in young Ayush
Mhatre, who responded with a maturity that belied his age — a brilliant 59 off 36 balls, including four
sixes, as he put on 113 runs for the second wicket alongside Samson. Their partnership was the
innings’ spine, consuming 67 balls and leaving DC’s attack in tatters.
The final three overs produced carnage. Shivam Dube joined Samson in the death overs and struck a
swift 20 off 10 balls, including a six, as CSK plundered 37 runs from the last 2.2 overs. T Natarajan
bore the brunt of the assault, conceding 54 runs from four overs at an economy of 13.50. Axar Patel,
the most economical Delhi bowler on the day, managed 1 wicket but still conceded 39 from his four
overs.

Second Innings: A Brave Chase Falls Short
Chasing 213, Delhi needed a flying start — and initially they got one. Pathum Nissanka came out
blazing, striking five fours and two sixes in a 24-ball cameo of 41 runs, combining with KL Rahul (18
off 10, including a six) to put on 61 for the first wicket in just under five overs. The Chepauk crowd
was briefly hushed, wondering if Delhi were actually going to pull off a heist.
But the wickets started tumbling in ugly fashion. Khaleel Ahmed picked up Rahul in the fifth over, and
Nissanka — looking rock-solid — was cleaned up by Anshul Kamboj two balls into the next over.
From 61/1, Delhi lost three wickets in the space of four overs to slip to 76/4, with Axar Patel and
Sameer Rizvi both falling cheaply. The match was already swinging sharply towards yellow.
Tristan Stubbs provided DC’s most spirited resistance, an aggressive 60 off 38 balls with three fours
and three sixes, and briefly relit hopes alongside David Miller (15). Ashutosh Sharma also showed no
shortage of intent — 19 off 10 balls at a strike rate of 190 — but the required rate remained out of
reach as wickets kept falling at crucial moments.
The man who sealed the deal was Englishman Jamie Overton, who produced one of the finest
individual bowling performances of the night: 4 wickets from 4 overs at a miserly economy of just
4.50. His spell broke the back of the chase during the death overs, removing Stubbs, Aquib Nabi, and
Kuldeep Yadav to leave Delhi’s tail exposed. Anshul Kamboj claimed 3 wickets, with Khaleel Ahmed
and Noor Ahmad each picking up one apiece. Delhi were bowled out for 189 in the final over —
brave, but ultimately not brave enough.

Turning Points
The Samson-Mhatre Partnership (overs 6–17): When Gaikwad departed at 62/1, many expected
CSK’s innings to slow. Instead, Samson and Mhatre combined for 113 runs in 11 overs — a stand
that transformed a decent total into an imposing one.
DC’s Middle-Order Collapse (overs 5–8): Losing three wickets in three overs — Nissanka, Axar
Patel, and Rizvi — derailed what had been a promising chase. From 61/1, Delhi nosedived to 76/4,
and the pressure of the required rate never relented thereafter.
Overton’s Death Overs Masterclass: With Delhi needing over 60 from the last six overs, Overton
was trusted with the ball and delivered emphatically — four wickets including the crucial scalp of
Stubbs in over 19, conceding just 18 runs across his four overs.
“Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 115 was a reminder that on his day, he is one of the most devastating batters in world T20 cricket — and on this occasion, his day arrived at exactly the right time.”
Post-Match Analysis
CSK’s batting depth was the story of the evening. They did not need more than three wickets across
20 overs, with Samson’s extraordinary innings providing a ceiling that was simply too high for Delhi’s
talented but fragile batting line-up to breach.
For Delhi, the evening raised familiar questions. Their top order made starts but failed to convert —
Nissanka’s blitz notwithstanding, the middle order’s inability to stabilise the chase after the powerplay
wickets proved costly. Stubbs was magnificent in a losing cause, and his 60 deserved better support
from those around him.
CSK’s bowling, led by the impressive Overton and the economical Anshul Kamboj, showed why
defending totals at Chepauk remains a formidable proposition. The ground’s short square boundaries
are often cited as a batters’ paradise, yet CSK’s well-varied attack — pace at the death, spin in the
middle — kept Delhi’s run rate permanently below what they needed.
This result cements CSK’s position as early-season contenders, while Delhi will need to address their
batting fragility if they are to challenge in the business end of IPL 2026.
